birdlife

a lovesong for odessa

why do birds make you smile?
and could i be an eagle in your skies,
to catch that secret twinkle in your eyes,
my heart would know no guile.

or would you rather I
     were but a homebound turtledove,
     abiding in the circle of
the dreams you amplify?

i'll be a crimson chat
if you will dialogue with me
     about a mutual destiny.
(i am no diplomat!)

still, i could be a wee
song sparrow charged with sweetest song,
whose whispers in your ear prolong
to an epiphany.

bananaquit or thrush,
     brown cormorant, bee hummingbird,
     crested quail-dove to passion stirred:
to your scarce arms i rush,

to revel in birdlife,
whereby your love my heartstrings pulls,
     whereof you are so beautiful,
my dear and lovely wife!
