kumbaya

sleepsong melody

“When life gets too overwhelming, just look up at the
night sky and lose yourself for a while.”—Deborah a Ten Brink

the infant moon
milks dry night's swollen breast,
heaving a sigh
of comfort, as the world
begins to swoon
for days-end mercy rest,
when every eye
beneath its lid is curled.

the stars soft-bred
along the milky way
their birthlight shine
to warm the atmosphere,
and soon is fled
the spirit of dismay;
soon, too, is gone
that pro-galactic fear

betwixt the earth
below and sky above.
deep-river trails
snake silently along,
aquatic mirth
arrested, where would rove
frail fish-fin sails
thrilled by their noonday song.

and not one bird
to fan the evening air;
no butterfly
to whisper on the wind;
no buzz is heard,
where bees new pollen bear;
no plaintive cry
of dove or egretkind.

no quarrelling
behind the bamboo fence;
no dominoes
slam-dunking at the bars;
no revelling
disturbs night's ambience;
kumbaya flows—
deep sleep drips from the stars!
