All That is Ours

“We are the sum of all the moments in our lives - all that is ours is in them: we cannot escape it or conceal it.” Thomas Wolfe

When we kiss, we bring all of the
lips we have touched.
When we lie upon my flower-petaled bed,
the eyes of dead lovers line our walls,
wishing for a glimpse of their past.

In a twist of passion, you press into me.
I gasp softly at the sudden filing of
my emptiness. In acts of mercy, we welcome
all that is ours, past and present.

The eyes of our curious onlookers close quietly
as you warm into me, becoming
one with my flesh.

Author's Note
My daughter's short reflection on a quote by Thomas Wolfe. She edited the photo from a selfie she made on her own "flower-petaled bed." Deep thinking from a 23-year-old.
