The beauty of the dust

You say "nothing will remain of you"
You say "there is no point"
And to this I must say "it is true"
Or would be if I didn't know
The value of the most fleeting lust
I know the beatuy of the dust

In darkest nights the demons come
They say no battle can be won
For it will all one day burn in the sun
Yes, nothing at all is here to stay
It will all die and whither away
It is quite depressing I must say

And then I remember the wise man
To whom one day these demons came
And said "they will not remember tomorrow
What you did for them in this moment"
And he said "tomorrow is not my concern
I did it for their joy today"

Yes, all will be lost far enough ahead
So I choose to focus instead
On what joy can be won and brought in this moment
I refuse to sing a future lament

For the dust of the future means something was here
That could gather cobwebs and rust
And that my friend is the end of my story

Now you know the beauty of the dust

Author's Note
The story referenced in this poem was told by an artist doing a review of a Star Trek episode. He told the story of how a doctor did something for mentally ill patients which brought them joy, but which he knew they wouldn't remember the coming day. He was asked why he did it if they wouldn't be able to remember. He said: "I didn't do it for tomorrow. I did it for today." Looking far enough ahead, everything will eventually die and fade. Nothing at all lasts forever. Far enough ahead not even the planet itself. Maybe far enough ahead not even our galaxy, or our universe. We must plan for the future, and take care of the future, but all that really matters is finding and bringing joy today. If you did this even one day your life was already meaningful, no matter what else happens.
