Top Shelf Dreaming

Top shelf, how quickly things hit the bottom rung
The beauty of truth interwoven with daydreams is how we begun
Two hearts messaging on tin can telephones attached by an emotional cord
Listening to each other's heart beat, because hanging up was to much to afford

The cost was simply to great, not a word said, please let me hear you breathe
The emotional cord sending messages back and forth of what we need
We both murmur until we doze off into each other's ear
Tin cans to our head as we pull each other near

As we sink below the covers, so very snuggly to each other's snuggly
You melting into me as I whisper into your ear of being so very lovely
Carefully and with stealth we both slide my hands lower into the deep
Just before hanging up in slumber we promise each other our love to keep

But REM is a hand knocking a bottle over from top to bottom shelf
Our dreams suddenly darken, our lies in our nightmares are all that's left
The emotional cord has been severed, the tin cans are now trash
Questions are readily on our tongues but there is no one left to ask

Our hearts are now asynchronous, we both refuse to listen to this beat
No one really wants the bottom shelf, they buy it because it's cheap
The both of us at opposite ends of a disconnected call
We both placed each other top shelf , not ever expecting a fall

Now as we sink below the covers we each can feel the chill of the night
Arguments and clanking simply happens, it seems we're holding on to tight
Hands kept to self as we dream of the distillery and being back in the fields
Two separate grains on different stalks wondering if dreams of top shelf are real
