Your Gasping Sigh

Your gasping sigh
caught on my shoulder and
lingered there as warm breath.
Yes, you were very much alive.

Your eyes grew wiser as I entered you
carrying only the unsecured promise of love.
From your slender throat
came the raspy chirps of
a startled child.

Your eyes grew kinder
       or were they simply
the eyes of innocence?
I felt pleasure mixed with sorrow as I
pressed full into your heat,
knowing I’d taken you a way
you might not have chosen
      if given more time.
