Image for the poem let there be a homecoming

let there be a homecoming

fall sun on a dare
shines over these fields
breaking through smokey air
highlighting a loss that is real

in the spirit of the season
stretch way up - follow the Breath
we're bound to find the reason
our pain's so keen it built a fence

we ask Earth Mother
shall we ever get better at living as one
or is defeating all others
the core struggle that must be won?

flailing with fix 'em up souls
Humanity beaten and bloodied
we waste time digging holes
Family yet blinded and muddied

the love in us can light a Prayer
we find some joy in each other's eyes
we replenish our ability to care
before we inevitably collapse and die

i'll be the first to admit that Anger
can take you down an alley of danger
everyone looks the sketchy stranger
when lost to the truth of the nourishing Manger

we the victims of overthink
know too well what's to be found
after feeling our hearts sink
so deeply into salted ground

Lord, let there be a Homecoming
refurbish the Wisdom of hearts
i'll raise my voice even if i can't sing
to find my way back to feeling a part

we can all rise together, from atlantic to pacific
for the love of this phenomenal nation
in the name of the prolific mystic
stand together for Revitalization

Author's Note
• North American: a high school, college, or university game, dance, or other event to which alumni are invited...a homecoming football game brings people together as an extended family. i fantasize that Americans will feel a kinship towards one another again one day, against all odds.
