Much Like That River

Much Like That River

People come into our lives and people go,
much like that river you see over there,
flowing right along in its journey to wherever
the hell it is going.

Much like that river with its twisting and turning,
even its alternating depth, so are our lives.
Our lives with those people,
either riding along with us or swimming to shore
for one reason or another to lie in the sun like some old log.

But our lives are up to us,
to our drive and desire,
to our motivation and imagination.

Do we keep paddling along if even alone?
We must surge.
We must cut and slice our way through the dirt, the mud and rock
that will fight to hold us back along the way.

There is treasure beneath the troubled water.
It lies there somewhere down below,
a sunken steamboat that we had forgotten about,
that we had buried deep down years ago.
But those treasures remain and just maybe
they call out to your from time to time,
telling you to come claim them again.

Listen for the call.
You must.
Open your mind to the beauty around you and take time doing so.
Those trees on the left, that one leaf lazily floating back and forth
as it descends in the wind like an old man relaxing in a hammock
with a beer on a lazy, Sunday afternoon.
The deer on your right as you travel this river, drifting along.
See it lift its head and notice you, then scurry off.

Like the river is a journey so is life
and there are miles and miles to go ahead.
It is not always going to be easy but it is also not always going to be hard.
There are no guarantees.
Who will ride with you if any?

Treasures are around us in many forms.
Treasure those people who stay for the long haul for they are rare
and treasure that call you hear deep in the night
telling you to keep sailing along.
