Half Moon Beach...

Where pelicans show an aquatic grace
As great denizens of the sky and sea...
Who plunge, to chop the waves with sword like face!

Plunging thus, how could its quarry flee
When it drops so boldly into the fray?
Beaks and feet like rocket nosecones and fins
With impacts marked by splash and spray
Just beyond the surf's sandy, pounding dins!

Those sorties take their toll. The beach is plumed!
Their spent feathers are snared in seaweed heaps!

Quills! Cut them just so and ink will be flumed
As a gift from the place where Neptune sleeps!

I think the muse controls these great birds
Knowing well that great feathers...make great words!
