Eating or heating
Did you think they would take it lying down?
My spendable income has taken a beating
You’ve every reason to govern honest and fair
How come I’ve to choose between eating and heating?

That's a shame that anyone in this day and age has to make that determination, dear Gus. I am deeply saddened that is the unfortunate story for anyone. I know I've had situations in my youth that have had me scrambling or going without and I hope that those in dire need can find some type of emergency assistance, if possible.
I agree, time to use civil disobedience / protesting to push for change! ✊🏻
Poignant and impactful piece...
Thank you for raising awareness, my friend

It’s a Very pleasant idea that you read it. And even more so, that you like it.
In the past, I made it a sort of principle not to protest unless I had thought up some alternatives.
I must admit that so far I must say that the problems are bigger (and let’s not forget: out of my zone of influence), so I can’t stick to my own principles.
Over the past 10 years or so, we’ve had Occupy, the Yellow Jackets and what not.
All they could do was yell their anger without offering a solution.
And getting nowhere. And disappearing without a trace.
Against my will I think I slowly join their ranks.
The only reasonable approach left is humor.
And standing for what we believe in.
If we go down, we’ll go down laughing. That’ll show the buggers.
I say our very own DUP Ashley for President!!!

Thank you dear ms B., for consolation.
Thank you dear Ashley for keeping our spirits up.

Hoi hoi
Thank you/dank je wel for your very nice post.
Clearly you have something like Dutch speaking roots. Or Flemish?
And I must apologise for posting this one - the one to thank you - so very very late.
I can remember I read about paling in het groen and all and that I intended to check up on your expression ‘Paling in het groen’.
After that I started to prepare for one of my travels and forgot all about it.
I am really sorry about that.
It may seem funny that I didn’t know about this dish. I am a veggie since I was 13 and what we eat in Amsterdam differs a lot from the customs in Belgium 🇧🇪.
But I’d love to look at this like, now I’ve enjoyed your heartwarming post twice.
Thank you so very much.
Kind regards, Gus

I marched in the 60s and 70s, but have never seen such widespread dysfunction as that which rears it’s ugly head today.
It begs the question as to what is the responsibility, duty of the poet in such dark times.
Important write, my younger brother. Ty

Hoi hoi
It’s really really good to hear from you again!
I didn’t do much of the marching and shouting way back then actually.
I was more of the smaller gestures.
As there was still poverty in Amsterdam in 67, I cooked ‘soul food’ for a while. Made breakfast for children who’d otherwise have to attend school on an empty stomach.
Organised a smallish scale food bank, that kind of stuff.
This is what bothers me most about the inability of ruling governments nowadays, that they cause problems that are so big and so disruptive, that I have absolutely no clue how to try and solve them.
I think we mustn’t burden ourselves more than we need to. Not only the poets have certain responsibilities, all humans have the responsibility to do little things to better the situation.
A very kind friend of mine offers free advise on how the Dutch financial things (including planning) are run in families. And what kind of bills they may expect and plan for. What do they know about the water board taxes?
I teach refugees to speak Dutch, so that they can get a job. And get diploma’s.
That sort of stuff. The community centre - scale of things.
And I like your post a lot. I am 72 years old, so that you call me your younger brother amuses me no end! Really, I’m very pleased with your post! Thank you very much.
Kind regards, Gus
