orison

a child’s nightsong

"At night we are all strangers, even to ourselves."
—Alexander McCall Smith

dark hands
are coming to get me!
o please, let me not be alone.
night scans
the silence, to fret me
with voices of strange undertone.

eyes locked,
i still, in the darkness,
see shadows make faces at me.
too shocked
to cope with such starkness,
i tremble, a leaf on a tree.

a pray’r
my father once taught me
hastes now to my hesitant lips:
“still near,
the Love that has sought me;
an army at my fingertips!”

no more
the darkness shall strangle
my confidence, deep in the night;
His pow’r
my fears shall untangle,
His Presence shine forth as New Light.
