The Babbling of Voices

Do our past lovers look on from the corners
of this borrowed room new to both of us?
Some stare with envy, some not.

Why do they murmur?
Are they commenting on our performance?
Or stumbling awkwardly for words as
if they've met but but can't remember
where or when?

The babbling voices build like
cicadas until nothing can be heard.
