I think it depends on how much you will tolerate.

Messy relationships have good sex in the beginning and then morph into depraved violence, usually in front of friends who'd rather be anywhere but there..plead the 5th ...

Mrs. Reynolds, one of my high school English teachers,told the class one day that writers always had messy personal lives, sometimes fueled by alcohol and/or drug abuse, poor choices in members of the opposite sex or any number of reasons. I never forgot that.
