Birthday Wishes

Then
I wanted a friend.
Someone to understand.
Someone to be there.
Someone to care.
I wish.
I wish.
And there You were.
A wish came true.
A friend.
Someone.
Something.
That I would always have.
You weren't something to borrow.
Something to lend.
You weren't going to break off, or bend.
You were there.
And you were my best friend.

Now:
I wanted love.
Something that you wouldn't give.
You were my best friend.
And now my girlfriend.
I promised you forever.
But that was coming to an end.
We were being torn apart.
Blaming the others best friend.
We met because we were all the other needed.
And then we needed someone else.
You needed her, though (at the time) you had your doubts.
I needed him, though (I would never admit) that I had already choosen him.

This Moment:
Happy birthday to me.
I got what I wanted now and then.
A boyfriend now.
A best friend then.

It's funny when you think about it really.
How I came full circle.
I lost one love on the same day that she appeared.
And then I gained a new one, when she disappeared.
And so I smile to myself.
And think about the both of you.
And I guess wishes do come true.
