In The Black

Lost in the fortress of a void
self imposed, isolation my toy
dark shroud of loneliness left me numb
I forgot life, living, joy, and fun

The birds sang a chorus I couldn't hear
flowers bloomed, but I refused to see
dogs bound in the long grass, enjoying alone
lost to the summer, its beauty, and glow

Questions of suicide, the darkest night arose
an emptiness inside, the stagnant waters grow
no knight in shining armour climbs my tower
this blade against my wrist at witching hour

The fear of endless sorrow keeps me here
I know that death's black horse I cannot steer
each moment I must strive to swerve the gallows
what shields us from the torment of our hollow?

Author's Note
A lifelong struggle, my mind tends to forget the times I must navigate through the bleakness of depression, other times it's there, like a heavy, weighted blanket. I wonder how others pull themselves...
