The Delinquent Lifeguard

Jealousy from pinecone fights
Killed by helpful advice
Spent my days screaming inside
I only wanted to feel alive
Hooked by blind admiration
From grease intoxication
Spinning in the same place
It’s a suicide race

It matters who you’re with
A witness to not forget
We split in the end

We talked about our broken hearts
And how he was secretly smart
Found our heads in the same place
Fractured in the same way
The chain link fence
Knows all our secrets
It’s an evening blue love
And you’ll never see it

He lived down back roads
Always there so he wasn’t home
A wild cherry lifesaver
With a loaded gun
He fired for fun
Suicide phrases
His key language
Kept his memories on a chain
Forever locked away

We were a paper clip chain
Something you can’t explain
He tried when no one else did
We were borderline friends

He taught me about the lies in first impressions
I just miss the connection
