water and electricity

Water and electricity don't mix
I keep waiting for lightning in my veins
and a blackout death
the afterimage of you holding
my limp body afterwards
burned into brain

It's been a while since I've seen his face
or heard the gruffness of his voice
the unspoken louder than this stoicism

He wears a tiki around his neck
older than I am
and I wonder if I'll inherit it
when he dies

I don't much care for the hoarded collection
of things I could resell
that would buy me new used car
or pay off a few months rent

I would prefer to hold the memories
stitch them into my skin so I don't forget
like the sentimental fool I am

Things won't bring him back when he's gone

Her last words play on replay in my head
and infinite loop I'll never be allowed to forget
because love and powerlessness
won't let me

I wait in anticipatory grief for love to leave again
knowing we hold borrowed time
like the wind through our fingers
on a stormy day
untamed and changeable
but ultimately finite

Water and electricity don't mix
I'm scared of dying
but I'm not scared of death
I'm scared of the absences we leave behind

She said "I can't breathe"
