Misconstrued

It was an auspicious start;
we laughed and chatted over lunch,
enjoying each others company
and completing our customary crossword.
In fact, we managed two!
After that, there was a moment
when the conversation stalled
and your unexpected question led me up a blind alley.
Somehow, we had jumped from A to D
without visiting B and C along the way—
something that we often do, which confuses our peers
as we ride our unusual wavelength together.
Not wanting to let on that this time
I actually didn't know what this was about,
I answered the question and changed the subject.
Two days later, sitting at home,
I burst out laughing,
suddenly realising what had happened:
you'd grasped the wrong end of the proverbial stick
and thought I was talking about something else entirely.
Though amusing, it's embarrassing,
so now I have a quandary:
shall I raise the embarrassing subject,
(drawing attention to it)
or let you go on thinking what you thought?!
I think my best bet
is to hope you've now forgotten!
