Driving on Empty
The red light
Has been glaring bright
For awhile now
Through the night
As I drive the family
On this road of life
There’s so much need
“Mommy cuddles”
I hear him plead
Melts my heart
(With its red “empty” glow)
So I give
My listening ear
And wipe his tear
Burning with warmth
Vapors of love
Another boy cries,
“I always fall!
See the bruises?!”
So I give him my all
Lighting more drops
From the emptying tank
To light his day
Pouring my love
into his need.
He’s moody—Give space
Now let’s talk—
It’s late? Stay up
Hear his knowledge; stroke the ego
Be thankful for his kindnesses
They should be enough.
Don’t ask, don’t need
Give praise, give attention,
Give space, give affection
The eyes of the heart
Grow shiny wet
Glistening
Please,
I’ve been driving on empty
For so long now
My heart WANTS
to keep on giving…
It just needs a fill-up
Who will give love
to Me?
Has been glaring bright
For awhile now
Through the night
As I drive the family
On this road of life
There’s so much need
“Mommy cuddles”
I hear him plead
Melts my heart
