30 Years
Every once in a while I wake up in a panic
“I haven’t finished my English paper and it’s due today!”
“I didn’t tape my drumsticks and it’s competition day!”
Only to realize damn! it’s been three decades
From that small dread comes a sigh of relief
I’m forty-eight years old
With more and more aches in my bones
But also with some nostalgia
The time seems to have gone by so fast
I look at the old year-book and wonder
What happened to him?
Or her?
Rest peace here
I wonder what transpired there
After graduation this one disappeared
I heard so and so is in the pen
This one lives in another country
I just ran into my buddy the other day
Remembering friends
Oh…to be young again
Maybe it’s the weight of the years that adds perspective
A reflection of everything in between
Perhaps it’s the recollection of our youth’s objectives
Taking stock, wondering if we achieved our dreams
Whoever you are or wherever you may be
Whichever path you took and whatever fate threw at you
Did you go with your hunches?
Did you roll with the punches?
Did life have some surprises along the way for you too?
I hope you found what you were looking for
Because at this age we surely have a different view
I hope your realized your goals and fulfilled those roles
But I just wanted to say happy anniversary
