NOVUS ORDO SECLORUM
It's with our libraries and teapots
That we cultivate civility
And marvel at concomitant thoughts
In a land of both the brave and the free!
It's how we spend our cloudier days,
For in contemplation lay a story,
And pots and books are the means and ways
Of arriving at cerebral glory...
Or something like the providential eye
And the emanating beams thereof
Which permeate our American sky
With nothing less than our dreams of love,
Showing the world that every day...
Happy pursuits are the AMERICAN WAY!

I feel like I am reading the archeologist turned poet. A vibe like a Simon and Garfunkel song. That closing line could be be interpreted so many ways, even comedically. Use to find a lot of comedy in politics for example, but the last two guys in the White House typically lead me more sad then anything else. (not a partisan rant here- I think both major parties have much to be disgusted about)

The whole thing came together after I looked up the meaning of the Latin phrase I used for the title, "New order of the ages", and I began to think about just what attributes I wanted to see maintained and promoted when it comes to The United States. Just what is the purpose of our Republic? Then I think my mind was immediately confronted with the familiar words "Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" which Jefferson famously re-worded from John Locke's "Life, liberty, and the pursuit of property". Leave it to an Englishman to be preoccupied with Property.
Somewhere in the ensuing intellection swirl I pondered which has more value, tradition or innovation? Well, provided that the tradition, like the form of the sonnet itself, can prove itself worthy under the scrutiny of more updated value and virtues, then why not both?
We must abandon the traditions that have proven themselves to be counterproductive to ourselves and our global habitat, but there are a few, such as the sonnet, which are not only worth maintaining, but indeed become more interesting when mingled with newer conceptual components, such as what I am encountering here at Deep Underground Poetry!
Indeed the sonnet is a literary artifact from the Italian Renaissance, and so is archeological, but still able to function in newer minds. Thusly I love how it sings when married to our younger voices.

As to politics. I still, foolishly perhaps, hope for a return to more productive public discourse, but I fear that people being as they are, that civility will only return to us after some totally wasteful bloodbath. On this, I hope I will be mistaken.
