The Unchanging
I love you, ____! I do!
But do you love me?
Or is all affection through?
with the months, years, decade plus
That have passed
Did love survive? Could it last?
I don’t just desire that man I knew
I want today this current you
My love didn’t form around things that change:
Youth’s form, shared pastimes, flirtings exchanged.
What drew me in to the love of you
were core traits:
your caring heart, earnest spirit, too
Your depth of thought lined with humor’s light
Your obsessions, & dreams, cares, fears
that drive you.
So don’t you see, where my heart lives?
not just in those memories and fantasies
You once could give
Though they’re special too
The truth is:
I’m simply in love with
You.
