Leaving a Love

I thought our love
was immune to the
natural ebbs and flows
of earlier loves.
But the tides of
passion have receded and
it’s time to walk softly away.

Treasure the memories of us
at our most intense.
Be thankful for what we shared.
We leave each other changed,
never able to be who we were
before our meeting.

I'll cherish your wife's accepting smile
and trust that she'll smile for others in the future.
