Dido 2

English version:

I ruined my reputation
Made a foe out of Iarbas
Endangered my whole nation
All for my dearest Aenas

You talk of your duty
I betrayed my dead husband
You talk of your Italy
A not-yet existing land
Take all my power
Take all you can
So you have to leave?
Then face me like a man!

Speaking of the gods
Remember that day?
That day when fate
brought us up to that cave
Remember the torches
we held so tight
It was Juno who made
our fires shine bright
It were the gods who made
the nymphs start singing
So that our love was forced
Into something fulfilling
It was our marriage
Our new beginning
A land for the Trojans?
Why not keep the Greeks from winning!

So no I am not officially your wife
There's no son for us going to arrive
But think about all that we have been through
How can you leave when you know
I love you?

Nederlandse versie (Dutch version)

Mijn dode man verraden
Vijand gemaakt van Iarbas
De roddel laten smaden
Alles voor jou, Aeneas!

Noem me buiten zinnen
Praat over je plicht
Vertel over een land
Dat nog moet worden gesticht
Beneem me van mijn adem
Beneem me van mijn licht
Als je dan weggaat
Zeg dat tegen mijn gezicht!

En je spreekt van de goden
En je spreekt van het lot
Maar denk eens aan die dag
Gespendeerd in die grot
Denk aan de fakkels
Die we hielden in onze handen
Het was Juno die toen
deze vuren heeft laten branden
Het waren de goden die
de nimfen lieten zingen
Dat ze uit onze liefde
Een huwelijk konden dwingen
Dat ons leven samen
Daar kon beginnen

Author's Note
This is based on the fourth book of the Aeneis by Vergulius. Queen Dido is madly in love with Aeneas who was told by Mercury to go and found Italy. I wrote the Dutch version (It's my native language) first and then the translation. It's not an exact translation, because it had to rhyme. But the important elements are the same.
