“Wake Me”

You. I do not blame you
For wanting to come home.
I need you to wake me
From a sleep so lonely.
I dreamed a terrible thing,
Something I never told
As you stood at the threshold
Between the fates of pain
Never to pass the door again.

In my dream, we sailed to isles ‘round the sun.
The stars were broken yet still shone.
I thought my voice would falter there,
You stood upon my soul. In my despair,
With the ghosts of light, you gazed and gave me
The lock, but never the key.
We began thinking of the other side
Where my scars are darkness
And there is no reason to hide.

Are we just prisoners of this emptiness?
On the other side, there is but darkness
Where I don’t know if we can dream ourselves away.
There is but a brief slumber at the close of day—
And such flowers as grow by night
Where no-one hears the weeping of my heart.
But I need you to hear
The falling of every tear—
Are you watching me hold you
Behind my eyes where your love exists?
I still need you to wake me.

Hidden behind the stars, you are shining.
I have seen that constellation by day.
I don’t know if I can run away
From the even sky I built for you—
A god slain by His own sin,
Graced not with the bliss of Heaven,
Falling at the altar of His offerings
To this creation divine
As those stars slay with their shine.

And when you wake me, I am still dreaming
That my scars have turned to light,
And I cannot weep from the pain of it.
Once, they were forgotten.
But as the sun dies through the window,
They are the sires of newborn day.
They may be soothed by a touch familiar and unknown
As you waken me to a sweeter agony.
Only this time, you give me the key.
