She Still Sleeps with Wolves

Be it wolves from the pack
Close knit family, the ones that are supposed to
Have your back
Or the ones that chose to hunt her
Sniff her out and follow her
Eventually devour her
As the sun sets every night
She says her prayers and holds on tight
Closes her eyes and waits
For the claws the bites
The midnight fights
That strip her of all she’s got
Down to the bone, white hot
How does she even navigate
Between those who snap
And those who wait
She digs in deep and hopes and prays
For the kind of sunlight that brings the day
The kind that might light the way
For sneaking off into the woods
And covering her tracks, sticking to familiar roads
Seeking solace with herself
Put the past up on the shelf
Finding herself then
On a hearth, tucked in
Warm and safe from the night
With scars and stains, quite a sight
But as she sleeps we will see
The wolves crawl in with no mercy
Surround her in the fire light
And whisper deep into her plight
You’ll never get away from us
You’ll never be alone
For each and every night you have
Out in the woods or in a home
No matter even how far you roam
We will circle every night
And whisper
The wolves will never ever
Take flight
