Eye of the storm
and your beautiful ghost
licks at my ear
tongue smile
warmer than eternal fire
Somehow
we make tea
juggling half a cup
up and out through the hatch
the courage for one last beat
keeping love
off the rocks

Hi Abra
This probably had a different meaning to me than most and I reading listed it for that reason. Since I stopped drinking, keeping love off the rocks has been a sign of care and affection not only for myself, but for the people around me. Sometimes you forget that addiction doesn’t just effect the person going through it, but everyone involved. So I found that line particularly poignant. It also suggests a certain potency to the said love of the poem — liking it raw, unfiltered, unwatered. And that’s something I can get behind, in my living and in my poetry.
That opening image in the first three lines hooked me straight away. I love how uncluttered this poem was. It just felt clean and tidy, and maybe it just appealed to me because that’s how I like my mind to be these days.
Much to ponder here for me. That’s where it all took my mind anyway.
