Lamp

Lamp

A golden lamp.
One with milky-white shade.
It is a lovely lamp many would say.
They have been saying that for generations now.
Generations within a family and its civil war.

That is how long this lamp has been around.
How long it has been in the family.
Said to be purchased at a dying, little shop
by some grandpa who the hell knows anymore.
Quite the long time indeed.

Bitter bones.
Bad blood.
Like any normal family though, right?
So it all began in that stupid little shop.
Grandpa “who the hell” certainly did not know when he purchased it.
Bitter bones.
Bad blood.

The damned thing only had the one bulb
that lasted forever and could not be changed anyway.
Many tried to change it, hoping perhaps doing so
would make some kind of a difference in things happening
but it would not let them.
It would not budge nor would it even break.

So many tried to destroy it over the years.
Tried to change the bulb, break the bulb, break the lamp.
Anything.
If some poor family member ever took the lamp somewhere
in hopes of getting rid of the cursed thing it would always
be back at home when they returned waiting for them to watch.
To cry. Beg. Even scream.

On any night the light could go out when the lamp deemed it time.
One was not meant to know when.
One never knew why.
One only knew that he or she was going to die
if they witnessed the lamp turn off.

Passed on over generations through death.
If some family member hated another
then that other family member just might get the lamp as a gift!
Who knows.
Bitter bones.
Bad blood.

The cycle would continue and continue.
The lamp would always stay within the family
delivering its hellish glow.
One could not bequeath the lamp outside the family line.

Are you a relative of the family?
Look out on your porch right now.
There is a package sitting there.
See it?
Can it see you?
Who knows.
You can be sure though that it CAN hear you.
It can hear you crying.
Begging.
Screaming!
Bitter bones.
Bad blood.
It is never going to go away.
