...and so it goes
that Destruction is always Male,
however it’s born,
however it identifies.
But we might just be learning now
that sometimes it’s a girl.
Becoming Female. A woman of dark
proportions. That on occasion
death doesn’t wear a charcoal tie
and creased trousers. They sometimes wear
lipstick, face-paint, extensions, jewels...
...your mother’s dirty robe,
chasing you at five years old
up through the house
to lock yourself
behind the bathroom door.
Only to let them in because
even at five you understood
that there was no escape.

this poem really hit a nerve for me on certain levels, i won't go into detail about it but it really left a heavy weight on my mind after i finished reading it,
i appreciate the way you turned the poem on its head regarding violence and how it can be the other way round at times, that certainly shows and contributes how men can often suffer in silence regarding domestic violence and also mental health issues as well.
it was interesting in the line about death doesn't wear a charcoal tie and creased trousers, they sometimes wear lipstick, face-paint, extensions and jewels, it brought to mind about amber heard doing a runway for a designer brand (can't remember for the life of me what designer brand it was) but she was adorned in a dress and particular jewellery & there is actually a picture she's taken where her hand is on show with bruised knuckles as if she had certainly thrown a punch at something or someone, in the official designer photographs that specific hand is hidden in an accessory that is part of the garment, i find it amazing what fashion and hollywood will do to cover up marks that would be seen as questionable
also the closing stanza really left a lump in the throat, having your eyes opened at a tender age to adults behaving badly can shatter a persons way of thinking when it comes to other people and how they may be towards them
it was an interesting read with much to read into

Thank you for your kind and thoughtful comment, Ethan. That’s a fascinating story about Heard and the fashion show. I don’t know how famous this person is now, and they died some years ago, but I remember my line manager at a shop telling me about when she worked backstage at a fashion show dressing Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, who was apparently a spoiled nightmare who’d throw stiletto heels at people.
