Love in Motion, Poetry in Earnest
a former friend once said
that poets make the best lovers
I rather think that if they did
we wouldn’t have much poetry
just adolescent notes
folded and held between the lids
and bases of school desks,
the crease between the doors
and walls of gym lockers,
and other such places
where boys and girls meet.
my friend moved on from poetry
and soon enough from me
but I’d like to add a postscript
if I may:
even when he was a poet he knew
as much about girls -
the objects of his lust -
as he did himself
that poets make the best lovers
I rather think that if they did
we wouldn’t have much poetry
just adolescent notes
folded and held between the lids
and bases of school desks,
the crease between the doors
and walls of gym lockers,
and other such places
where boys and girls meet.
my friend moved on from poetry
and soon enough from me
but I’d like to add a postscript
if I may:
even when he was a poet he knew
as much about girls -
the objects of his lust -
as he did himself
