BUCKY'S NURSING HOME BLUES
'96 Buick dead in the drive
and he remembers
when they bought it
new
not so long ago
and damn those years
gone
and her
gone
and the roof
'bout rotted
off the house
and the stove
don't work
and the knees
ache so bad
you can't go
and getting old
must be a crime
'cause goddamn
they take it all
and lock you up
and swear it's
for your own
damned good

I work in a nursing home and take care of many my age and even younger. I see some folks thrive in it and some wither, and I know they've all given up everything to be there. One wishes there was an alternative, but often there is not. If they are alone. One fall, one medical issue, one trip to the doctor or the emergency room and elderly can lose their right to independent life, truly "for their own good." But, of course, they just want to go home.

Dear J,
A very realistic piece on aging, caring, loss and love. This has me thinking of my own aging process and how much I’m big really enjoying it. I have to confess I hope never to reach the stage where I’m put away for my own good. Great write. H🌷

I hope to squeeze every drop of joy from my later years - leave just enough in there for an easy passing.
