I don’t believe I ever had childhood fantasies
mostly, because I remember very little
no smiles no laughter
more of pain & what came after

always running
from something
from someone
trying to escape

I DO remember once ----
tried to escape by swallowing
all the pills in our medicine cabinet
hoping to enter dreamlands
where 5 years less of
adolescents’ fantasies
might thrive

I failed in my attempt
woke up to lectures
woke up to a sterile place
woke up to more coercion
and bible memorization

also woke up with a renewed
will to survive
while defenestrating the
childhood fantasies
I can and cannot remember
