the sound of trumpets

1.
to call to assembly

resound, ye silver trumpets,
and gather all ye citizens of earth!
swift-reap your giant fishnets
and let them come, who are of noble birth.
assemble with an ear to hear,
an eye to see, and lips to cheer;
call everyman from whom life’s breath comes forth.

2.
to sound an alarm

what cares have you in silence,
when every pin-drop echoes in your ear?
is there just cause for violence?
sound the alarm, let rival forces fear.
alert and poised to sift the noise
from every ploy the foe employs,
our watch grows vigilant when threat draws near.

3.
to proclaim a time of rejoicing

let all the stars be singing,
let mountains clap their hands, and rivers dance;
set lithe-winged bird flutes ringing,
let cavern harps their plectrum guilds advance.
give thanks for morning sunshine bright,
give thanks for every shade of night,
give thanks for every changing circumstance.
