shadows of eve

And I will put enmity between thee and the woman,
and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt
bruise his heel.
- Genesis 3:15 KJB

and yet my mother heard
death in the garden
sweet like a bird
his truth worth not one farthing

and yet my mother erred
being not as clever
as when love stirred
man and his wife together

and yet my mother wept
just like a river
so swiftly swept
from grace, fated to wither

and yet my mother cried
in her childbearing
virtue had died
the serpent fat with jeering

and yet my mother slept
where my forefathers
her nature kept
as each at death’s door gathers

and yet my mother’s word
becomes my warning
death is interred
joy cometh in the morning
