Image for the poem snake in the grass

snake in the grass

yon solitary highland slitherer
content to bloom in secret rendezvous,
pale fight you bring the weary wanderer,
knowing too well your head his heel shall bruise.

base anacondas in tight mating balls,
your matriarchal harems venom-clad,
art thou content with such vile victuals—
a recklessly consumed olympiad?

greenland, ireland, new zealand, chilly Iceland,
art thou twice blest, the serpent not to raise?
or is it that thy climes reserve no nice island
for traitors cursed by heav’n to spawn or graze?

beyond wild sage and mesquite, fern and briar,
a company of cunning men recline,
that snares the world with diabolic ire,
to render truth defeated and supine.

how sharp his tongue, and smoother still his call,
as idle eve the garden lends her charm!
snake in the grass initiates the fall
God’s Sacrifice lone can redeem from harm.
