Why Can't I Cooperate

Aren't you all for it?
Watching me immitate my own words, sarcasm, confusion?
So I (we) can dream of merrier weather?
So I can vie for harmony
Just for once in this neverending August
heat
My sultry stringed conscious
Spins a web of pure resentment
Yours--and I'm tangled in it

Didnt Daddy warn me?
Didn't Mama drown me in dissapointment, faithless bets, impotent vicarious safety
Didn't grandmother disinfect my heart
And my throat
With her blue rubber gloves
I'm not free from it yet
I'm flailing in the ocean to get to the river

Can't you call this a living
Where we become movie stars
In these resolute looks, cigarettes hangin out
Jim and Judy, Romeo and Juliet
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?
So dramatically smooth
On dawn's gray hungover morning
Driving to the shore
Blasting "Midnight at the Oasis"
Beautiful sex
We scoop up those memories
And build castles
All of us and more
In the boats upon the harbor
We saw our names in Navy Blue
My god, my creature, my father
Streetcar named desire
If you could see what I've built for you

Wouldn't you expect a better miracle?
Than this freckled Irish fool
Cut yourself off at the knees
To get a better look at me
To get a better seat
In your academy of love
What are you looking for?
Defrosting your windows with my tears
To catch a reflection of your own
Just please don't ask what I'm crying about
Hollow and shallow
Your fingers bleed
On the rust that needs a hammer
On the trust that needs a seed

How many replicas
History of World War Threes
Can be counted on to say
We're just one of them in the cold
It's not our fault we fight for the old
And decrepit sanctimonious lust
It's not even our fight anymore

But that wont stop the silence
Make the laughter easier to fake
The weeks folding over the days
And bleedimg into my night
It conjures my fears and feeds my disgust
Freedom as sin and heartache a must.

But, my Johnny--

My dying last refrain
In "the last summer rain"
From your finished book--I'm so proud again
I love you, I love you, I love you
