Perpetual Pugilist - First Fight
Bell sounds
debut bout commences
shoot from the corner
palooka arms flailing
no instinct for attack
unschooled in defenses
opponent observing
foe’s naivete
pulls punches, backpedals
engages young rival
in peekaboo play
Maturing, more tempered
with each subsequent round
opponent intensifies blows
memorizing moves
by patient coach taught
survival instinct
wisely nurtured, grows
now counters and fends off
more punches than not
Preparing for seventh round
tragedy strikes
when ailing trainer
to canvas collapses
from arena taken too early
sucker punched
right before starting bell sounds
still with cutman-promoter
enters the ring
to prove that the training
had not been in vain.

Dear GW,
To me, this poem is an excellent metaphor in the art of growing up. Maturing within a relationship and trying to figure out this oft times ridiculous game called life, which feels like a daily boxing match. Truly appreciated everything about this piece. H🌷
