We are all Rats

A rat is what they call me.
A stinky, filthy rat.
A diseased, spineless, weapon of nature.
What's so wrong with being a rat?

I hunger for food that does not come easy.
I thirst for a warm place to rest.
I bleed for a life I deserve to live.
so I ask,

What's so wrong with being a rat?

The sights I see on human streets bring that sorrow to one's eye.
How am I the evil,
the terrible rat,
how am I the bad guy?

beating, robbing, lying to one another.
Humans do this for fun.
if what humans say about rats is true,

Humans must also be one.

Author's Note
Kind of a messy poem. I wanted to try and capture the hypocrisy between humans and rats. Humans claim rats carry disease but did Christopher Columbus not bring disease with him to the American Indians?
