when a star leaves a smoke signal

The ashes still smoulder
but the fire might as well be out
I don't burn brightly
I'm no longer a beacon in the night
calling out other lonely weirdos
to come find me

I pool in the dust and pray
no one sees the embers
and tries to find the girl
who burned so brightly
she burnt herself out

I am not a phoenix
I'm just a girl who dared to dream
without boundaries
I rarely asked for anything
and it was easy to be silent
when I was the sun
easily placated with ego-driven love

It was easy to forget I was born a star
so bright and strong I defied death

Somewhere or many somewheres
I got lost
until I found myself a campfire
sending out smoke signals
no one could read

Reduced to embers
I can't remember what made me divine
just that at some point I was

The ashes still smoulder
but the fire might as well be out

I don't burn so brightly anymore
