Still, We Remember

You’ve now found
the last great love of your life.
I guess I wish you all the best.

Were we mere children when we first loved?
Our lives later became books
filled with stories of love and laughter
mixed with sorrow.

I’m thankful we wrote our preface together.
What a prologue it was!

The breasts I first kissed went on to
nourish three children.
Those same breasts nursed the
lust of a few men you
accepted as worthy.

Our first kiss was beautiful and soft.
Those same lips that tasted the mystery
of my swollen adolescent desires
shared love across the expanse of your life.
Still, we remember our first kiss,
don’t we?

The warm creamy custard of you
grew and matured, birthing three humans
and sharing unprintable stories with those
patient enough to cross your thresholds.
Still, we remember that moment I first entered you,
don’t we?

Now, this day, all that you are and have been
is given to the last great love of your life and
he is blessed. May he know and understand
what he’s been given. May he cherish you
until your last moments.

Author's Note
I wrote the first and last stanza of this on a note with a wedding gift. Later, I wrote the center section while thinking back on our love.
With a nod to John Prine's “I Wish You All The Best.”
