Why

Why do they make it so hard
Being a girl, being gay, being black, being trans
They make me sad, they make me afraid
Am I so crazy for crying
Don't keep denying, people are dying

Why can't I be paid equally?
Why can't they enjoy each other's company?
Why did you kick him out of your family?
Is this really who you want to be?

Am I supposed to raise my children, in this world filled with hate
When I'm supposed to be happy for her
I'm afraid my daughter gets drugged on her first date
Where I need to tell my son it's okay to cry
Where a man with just some human decency is called an ally

Be chill, be cool, or else they won't like you
Don't resist be nice, just say yes to compromise
Agree to disagree, then shut the hell up
Who cares if a black man gets shot by a cop.

Well I'm sorry I'm passionate, I'm sorry I care
But these are the stories that need to be shared
We can't ignore the fires that burn outside
Let's make a difference and change the spotlight
