Heartbreak Symphony

A cold heavy rain poured from the sky as Parker ran towards the bus stop. Her lungs burned as she tried to keep from completely breaking down in tears. She never should have let herself fall in love with him. I knew all he would do was break my heart. He was so sweet and caring. How could he be one of them? How could he turn out to be nothing but a drug dealer? I should have gotten to know him better. God Dammit! Parker you are so stupid. She thought as she sat down and sobbed into her hands. I feel so defeated. Her jaw throbbed in pain from her hard sobs and not being able to open it. The wires were starting to become uncomfortable.
     “Are you alright?” Someone asked.
Parker looked up to see an older man standing by the bus stop sign. Had he been there all along? She nodded as she rubbed her eyes trying to hide her tears from the man.
      “Where are you heading?”
“Home. If I can call it home anymore.” She whispered.
“A young girl like you shouldn’t be alone in the city at night. There are dangerous people out here. Why are you crying? Are you hurt?”
“Just my feelings and my pride.” She sighed.
The man walked up to the bench and looked at her with concern in his eyes. He pointed to the empty seat beside her.
“May I sit and talk with you while we wait for the bus?”
Parker nodded as she moved her backpack to give the man more room. What was she supposed to tell this man? That her boyfriend is a drug dealing gangster. No, that would send off too many red flags. How did she not catch this before? All his lowlife friends are druggies and the sneaking out at night. That should have been a given. Brock was right. I am just a senseless fool who will always be alone.
“My name is Walter. What’s your name?”
“Parker.” She answered shaking the man’s extended hand.
“What happened that hurt your feelings so bad?”
“My boyfriend. He told me something that he has been hiding from me.”
Walter took off his large square glasses that reminded her of her own glasses. Gently he wiped the raindrops off and replaced them. Why was an elderly man like him out in this rainstorm? She thought as she watched him carefully.
“Aha…I had a gut feeling. What did he tell you? Perhaps I can help.”
“Thank you, but I don’t think you will understand.”
“Miss Parker, I guarantee you that I won’t judge. What did your boyfriend tell you that hurt you so bad?”
Parker rubbed her jaw gently trying to relieve the aching pain that recoiled through her face. She just wanted to go home and take her pain medication.
“Is your jaw hurting you?” Walter asked.
“Yes, it’s broken and wired shut. I was in an accident nearly a month ago. I haven’t had any of my pain medication since this morning. My boyfriend Dawson, I live with him because my home life wasn’t good. His mom and him invited my daughter and I to live with them” Parker whispered as she started to cry again.
“You have a daughter? You’re practically a baby yourself. How old is your little one?”
“Four months. It’s complicated. Anyway…we have been living with them since I got out of the hospital three weeks ago. Today after school, Dawson said he needed to tell me something because he wanted no secrets between us. He knows all the awful things that happened between my parents and me. I thought it was great that we were finally moving somewhere in our relationship. But then, he told me that he’s part of a gang here in Branson and that he’s second in command of it. That he used to deal drugs. Now he just over sees the drug dealers. I feel so hurt and stupid for not seeing it before.”
“Now girl, you aren’t stupid. You are a brave young lady. Taking on the role of motherhood so young. I see your school I.D. there on your backpack. You’re still trying to get an education even while raising a baby. You are not stupid. Now what your boyfriend told you is scary and alarming. Parker, young boys get themselves into trouble. Dawson got himself in a serious predicament. Has he ever tried to hurt you? Does he treat your baby good?”
“He’s been wonderful to me. His mom and him helped me escape my abusive stepfather. Dawson has never made me feel unsafe. You should see him with my little girl. His eyes light up when he sees Mackenzie and he’s always helping me with her. He’s sweet and understanding. He’s my best friend. We have only been together probably two months now but, it’s like I’ve known him forever. That’s why this confession of him being in this gang has me so shaken. I would have never guessed him to do anything like it. The reason I am so upset about it is my mom was a drug addict and I’ve seen some terrible things happen to her at the hands of gang leaders. I don’t want my daughter to be around them.” Parker sighed.
“You just said for yourself how good this boy is to you and your daughter. I don’t think he will bring harm to the two of you. I’m sorry you had to experience some unpleasant things at the hand of your mother and her addiction. That’s not fair to you, but you just told me he helped you out of an abusive situation. If that boy didn’t care about you, I guarantee he never would have done that. A ruthless gang member would have turned up his nose and walked off. Your Dawson didn’t do that.  Do you think you can continue your relationship? Do you want to continue your relationship?”
“Yes, I want to continue the relationship so bad. For once in my life, I feel wanted and I feel loved. I love him. I just feel so torn.”
Walter smiled and put his arms around her lightly hugging her to him. Parker cried into his chest realizing she just confessed she loved Dawson. To her, he would always be the misunderstood boy from her class not the bad boy gang member he confessed himself to be.
“It’s okay to feel torn Parker. It’s okay to be upset. You wouldn’t be normal if you weren’t upset. If this relationship was meant to be everything will fall into place. You will work out your differences and you will move passed this. Go home to Dawson and tell him how you feel. Tell him what you are afraid of and tell him what you are torn about. Most important, tell Dawson how much he means to you. Okay? Can you do that for this old man?” Walter asked letting go of her.
Parker nodded as she swiped away her tears again. That’s when a squad car pulled up and Chad got out running over to her. She raced over to him and wrapped her arms around him. Chad let out a sigh of relief. He had found her safe and sound.
