Been Hurt Before

So I’ve been hurt before,
So I’ve been hurt
Like so many others. (X2)
I acted out with someone (X2)
And faced my own annihilation. (X2)

I don’t want to be
Just another statistic (X2)
Maybe lying on the floor
Lifelessly (X2)
While my lover’s standing by the door
In disbelief. (X2)

Don’t tell me that’s what he wanted. (X2)
Don’t tell me that’s what I wanted. (X2)

A gun was forbidden
Because I knew I might use it in the end.
As a preamble to a crime
I knew I would have been
Out of my mind.

How could I live
If I had taken his life? (X2)

So I’ve been hurt before. (X3)
So I’ve been hurt.

Author's Note
I wrote this song in 2015 many years after I had survived a domestic violence relationship. It’s such an important topic and affects so many people’s lives.  The realization that I could be driven to murder someone who was hurting me but whom I still loved was what got me out of the relationship.  For me, this song is haunting.  He could have killed me on several occasions.  Either way, we both carried the burden of being ill.  Those scars go deep.
