Haunted and Lost (*Strictly Fictional)

Nine years later he returned, looking for answers to what happened when the people from the farm came to the house to play mind games on his mum and sister

He visited the surrounding cove and the café where he’d first met Arthur and Lily, only to find it under new management

No, the new owners weren’t around when it all happened, they didn’t know anything about it

He left the café and walked along the shore, remembering how the bearded Elder had walked with him along this shore one spring morning nearly a decade earlier;
how they’d sat on a bench together to pray while the sea had stretched out ahead of them

The Elder had assured him that Dad would take him out for supper, but the invitation never came and Dad vanished from his life

He returned to the two houses on the sea front
the one where he’d lived with Mum and his sister, and the house next door where tragedy had struck

From there he went on to the cliff, passing the spot where Arthur had stood with his binoculars

He climbed the weaving pathway to the top and stared into the horizon, trying to remember something that would explain why the events had unfolded

He peered down to the shore below and saw her sprinting along the sand, towards the sea water, digging her toes into the waves, laughing as she swam out to sea, towards the tiny boat in the distance

No, it can’t be

It's her

Now he has returned in the middle of winter, searching for his love
He roams the cliff tops in the fog with a torchlight, but doesn’t find her, his calls lost in the roar of wind and sea
the vast and bleak surroundings mirroring his own churning loneliness
