The Girl I Should Have Kissed

Goodbye to the girl I should have kissed,
unaware of pleasures missed.
I held your hand and wished for more,
But would not take the risk.

You’ve lived a life since that first night
Sorrow and love mixed with delight
Your brother said you wished I’d kissed you.
Tonight I know your wish was right.

Author's Note
A friend asked me to accompany his sister to a ballgame and entertain her afterward. There was an awkward moment at the end of the evening when I wanted to kiss her but didn't. Twenty years later, I heard of her death and felt sad at what I’d missed.
