I cannot pretend to understand,
Why you withdraw your hand
While we stand at the gate
Between our odds and our fate.
On the bridge you look to me,
And you do not see
What your love means to my heart,
And you turn to depart,
And I watch as your hand disappears
Through my veil of tears.

And I am so afraid
Of the steps we never made,
For I must walk now on my own
And try to find my way home.
I cannot step backwards,
And speak with more than words,
For my deeds, and my vow
Mean nothing to you now.

On my way to the edge of the past,
I would have answered, had you only asked.
But when I return to that day
There is nothing that we can say
Differently than what was said then,
And as I lie, I remember when
I fell in love with your soul
And my empty halves became whole.

On the bridge between our spheres
I look to you through my tears.
And the gate closes on tomorrow:
A day I shall never know.
Can I hold you one last time,
And pretend that you are mine,
The way I used to
The way I always knew.
Can I hold you?
