[ On Poetry ] Reading Railroad
Sometimes watching a train
at a crossing can feel like
impatience and exasperation
had enough time to make a baby
in the backseat as
car
after
car
after
car
goes
by
And sometimes, a poem
is a really long ass train
because the author kept
adding
and
adding
and
adding
cars
at every railyard in America
Yet it's inconvenient spacings
that kill momentum of the multiple
engines required for towing
and pushing such a titanic vessel
slowing down
the reading
to a
crawl big
time if too
many are
inserted into unnecessary
locations of the locomotive
Size doesn't matter
but icebergs can
while an ill conceived
train of thought
often ends with derailment
before the caboose finally
arrives
