Image for the poem I killed the Halloween pumpkin

I killed the Halloween pumpkin

All I wanted was
to catch up on sleep
but kid missed the school bus
so I'm out of my coccoon
sun screaming at my eyeballs
exhaustion buzzing my ears
a hailstorm of troubles
bombarding my skull

Trying to salvage the situation,
compose a grocery list on the fly
park in the lot and reach
for the wallet that
isn't there

Drive home in fuming silence
resisting urges to weaponize the car

The neighbours have witnessed
some strange things
and now this
I wonder if they feel safe here

Picked up all the pieces
Tossed them in the compost
like a responsible adult, and
swept away all the guts

Not a trace
