It's Halloween! YAY!
And nothing is more true
that goes for me
that goes for you:
Poetry is a two-way street
where adults AND children
Trick or Treat!
So encourage the youth
being ghoulish n ghostly
to go that extra mile
with more than a mostly
boring white sheet
as a costume
by not being so stingy yourself
when handing out the candy
Here's some Jawbreakers
and Hershey Bars
and Jolly Ranchers
and Nerds
and . . .
Use your words!
But if that's too much to ask
don't be surprised in the least
at finding on your stoop
a flaming paper bag
filled with dog turds
Oh, POOP

I loathe trick or treat, even though I like Halloween, but I'm British and have not-so-fond memories of being forced out of the house in a cheap homemade costume so that my dad and stepmother could enjoy some alone time.

I actually never Treated and Tricked myself, having spent my childhood surrounded by soybeans far away from any civilization. And my parents rarely were ever inclined to spend time with their children outside of the home. We could have been sacrificed to a god in the cornfield and it would have been days before anyone noticed we were missing.

Hahahahahaha! Do they STILL do that prank irl? Halloween used to be one of my favorite holidays. We'd go all out decorating the yard and house; always had an open house the closest weekend to it. Now it's a ghost town it seems. We hardly get ANYONE anymore. Too many organizations and municipalities are hosting them now. Parents hardly allow their children out the door!

Dang. It's definitely not the same anymore. There was a time when Haunted House attractions had actors that could physically grab you. I doubt thats the case anymore.
For me, Halloween has always been about watching movies. Though I confess to starting somewhere in mid September this year ( I blame Jack Heslop for that LOL )!

How I miss trick or treating. We don’t get any treaters either. Rather sad for what should be a fun holiday. I like that your poem recalled many fun years as a kid planning our costumes and dressing up and the excitement of the candy!! H🌷

Thank you, Honoria! Instead of candy, I'm handing out scary poetry advice and movie recommendations this year. And I expect lotsa lobbed eggs and toilet papered trees in return.

So funny. I know for a fact that people still do the flaming bags of poo. It's the best prank EVER (forking a yard is up there though). People who hand out full-size candy bars are angelic beings. My mother-in-law goes all out and she has hundreds of kids every year. She and I and my daughter are all donning costumes to pass out candy to the little goblins. I love this time of year, it's magical. You can feel it sizzling in the air. WOOT!!

Eerie, it sounds like a magical evening! I do have fond memories of owning a house in a subdivision for 14 years and scaring the crap out of as many kids as I could! Thanks for the read and sharing!

Yep, you gotta earn it. Kids without costumes that came to my door got the shittiest candy. Put some effort into it you fucking slacker generation.

Brother you are on fire! Maybe because we’re slowly coming out of this pandemic there is a little bit more hope, a little more kindness, teaching our kids that the world has a lot to offer, and it’s especially sweet this time of year.
