Erika

I met Erika in the school hallway

Wearing freckles and a smile

Lovely face framed by two braids

As she looked at me a while

A day, a week, two years...

From her place up on the wall

Within the poster in the hall

Erika was a puppy-hunter

At nine years old, an animal-lover

Who went cycling by one day

Looking for puppies gone astray

Belonging to poor men who asked for help

They found her poor bones eight years later

To this day they don't know

What became of her

Only the one who took her knows

And left what remained of her

That helpful, brave puppy-hunter

Who took pity on worried dog owners

So Erika kept smiling in the hall

Under the word 'missing' on the wall
